Dit is weer zo'n een buitengewone vis waar de zee rond de ABC eilanden vol mee lijkt te zitten.
Gister tijdens het snorkelen zag ik er twee op de bodem rondscharrelen.
Op het eerste gezicht lijken ze wel wat op insecten. Ze zijn neutraal bruin grijs groen gevlekt zodat ze niet opvallen tegen de zandige ondergrond. Met hun kleine voor vinnetjes, die een beetje op pootjes lijken, graven ze in het zand op zoek naar kleine visje of ander dierlijk voedsel. Hun buikvinnen gebruiken ze om over de bodem te lopen. De lange zijvinnen vallen wel op, maar pas als ze weg zwemmen en deze vinnen uitklappen zie je hoe schitterend deze vissen zijn!
De zijvinnen blijken het een soort half doorzichtige vleugels te zijn met een fosforiserende blauwe kleur aan de uiteinde waarmee ze door het water kunnen vliegen. Er zijn waarnemingen dat ze ook korte tijd boven de zee kunnen zweven maar dit is nog niet wetenschappelijk bewezen.

This is another extraordinary fish that the sea around the ABC islands seems to be full of.
Yesterday while snorkeling I saw two scurrying around on the bottom.
At first glance they look a bit like insects. They are neutral brown gray green mottled so that they do not stand out against the sandy substrate. With their small front fins, which look a bit like legs, they dig in the sand in search of small fish or other animal food. They use their pelvic fins to walk on the bottom. The long side fins do stand out, but it is only when they swim away and unfold these fins that you see how beautiful these fish are!
The lateral fins appear to be a kind of semi-transparent wings with a phosphorescent blue color at the tips that allow them to fly through the water. There are observations that they can also float above the sea for a short time, but this has not yet been scientifically proven.
