Octopus

Octopoda
25 cm (10 in)

Octopuses are found in all the world's seas and oceans, and can live on dry land for a short time, as long as their gills are moist. The 8 catch arms are covered with suction cups. to protect themselves they can spray an ink cloud. They are mollusks, so they don't have any kind of skeleton. That allows them to crawl in and out of anything no smaller than their eye! This allows them to nestle in all kinds of crevices to look for food or shelter. That food consists mainly of crabs, shrimps, mollusks and fish. The only hard part in its body is the horny beak that resembles that of a parrot.

Octopuses are very intelligent animals that have short and long term memories. Two thirds of the nerve cells are not located in the brain, but in the traps. What this means is that each tentacle can think for itself. This makes the octopus very creative and flexible if it ends up in an unfamiliar situation. For example, he can open a bottle, escape a net or adjust the texture and color of his skin to a new environment. He can even imitate another creature to scare away enemies.
Research has shown that the octopus is capable of distinguishing all kinds of patterns and shapes. They are also capable of learning. In addition, 'playing behaviour' is sometimes shown as evidenced by examining and manipulating objects and toys that are in aquariums. It is known that specimens kept in aquariums sometimes leave the aquarium and go in search of food.

Unfortunately, these extraordinary animals do not live very long. Reproduction also heralds death. Males die several months after mating. In some species, the females keep the sperm in the body for several weeks, until the eggs have matured. After fertilization, the female lays about 200,000 eggs. The eggs hang in bunches from the ceiling of the burrow, or are laid one by one on the bottom. The female guards the eggs against predators and regularly blows water over them to provide them with oxygen. She does not eat during this period (about a month). When the eggs hatch, the female dies and the baby octopuses float for some time in clouds of plankton, feeding on the larvae of crabs and starfish, etc., until they sink back to the bottom of the sea.

Pijlinktvis  Squit

Sepioteuthis sepioidea
60 cm (24 in)

Squids get their name from their appearance. They have an elongated, cylindrical shell, with two laterally pointing fins at the rear end, giving them an 'arrow shape'. In some species, the fins extend to the front of the mantle. They have a clearly developed head with two eyes. At the front of the head, around the mouth, they bear ten tentacles covered with suction cups. Eight of them are regular arms, two are longer trapping tentacles. The shell is reduced to a single flat plate, which is embedded in the top of the soft muscular mantle. The back  has the shape of a siphon, with which they can move according to the principle of the jet propulsion.

Squids generally move using their two lateral fins, which allow them to swim both forwards and backwards. For high speed, they use the siphon, which allows them to shoot only backwards, that is, with the arms at the back. This way of locomotion is mainly used to escape predators. For this they sometimes also use their ink bladder with which they can blind the pursuer.

Cuttlefish are carnivores and can efficiently overwhelm relatively large animals with their strong arms and suction cups. but they also eat a lot of krill and plankton. In some species, the squid's saliva contains toxins that subdue the prey. Dn its body. The deep-sea squid Taningia danae has been filmed emitting blinding flashes of light from large photophores on its arms to illuminate and disorient potential prey.

Cuttlefish are among the most intelligent invertebrates. For example, groups of Humboldt squid hunt cooperatively, moving up through the water at night and coordinating their vertical and horizontal movements while foraging.

It uses a complex series of color changes during social interactions and the reproductive ritual. They have a range of about 16 body patterns in their repertoire.
They have a life cycle of about a year, they grow quickly and die soon after mating.
