Papegaaivis                                                    Parrot fish

Scaridae

1 meter (39 in)

There are many species of these Parrotfish. They owe their name to their beak, which looks a bit like a beak, but of course also because of their fantastic, colorful splendor. They use the beak-like beak to pulverize the coral so that they can reach the algae-filled polyps that hide in the coral reefs. If you listen closely, you can hear them scrape along the coral while diving or snorkelling.

Special!
All parrotfish are born as females and, as with most fish, male parrotfish contain harems of females. When the male dies, the most dominant female changes color and sex. This transition takes place within a few days. This will be the dominant male

Before going to sleep, they blow mucus bubbles out of their mouths that protect them while they sleep. This probably masks their scent making them harder to find by nocturnal predators such as parasites and moray eels.

While snorkeling you always come across them, the colorful parrot fish.
